The inaugural Arctic Circle Assembly in 2013 brought over 1200 participants from more than 35 countries to Reykjavík, making it the largest international gathering on the Arctic. The Assembly was attended by political and business leaders, environmental experts, scientists, indigenous representatives, and other international stakeholders.

Speakers at the 2013 Assembly included Eric Schmidt, Executive Chairman of Google; Premier of Greenland Aleqa Hammond; Larry Brilliant, President of the Skoll Global Threats Fund; and Artur Chilingarov, Special Envoy of President Vladimir Putin to the Arctic. United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon and former United States Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton sents video messages acknowledging the importance of the Assembly as a Forum for international dialogue on the Arctic.
