Over 1500 participants from over 40 countries attended the 2014 Arctic Circle Assembly. President of Finland Sauli Niinistö gave a keynote speech concerning the involvement of the Republic of Finland in the international Arctic community. Christiana Figueres, Executive Secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) discussed the importance of the Arctic in international climate diplomacy. Other highlights included sessions on fisheries, coast guards, indigenous representation, and international scientific cooperation.

President of Finland Sauli Niinistö delivered a keynote speech in the opening session of the 2014 Arctic Circle Assembly during which he discussed Finland's partnerships with other Arctic nations as well as non-Arctic states in the development of Northern economies for the benefit of Arctic peoples, the protection of Arctic environments, and the role of the Arctic in international climate diplomacy. Finland will Chair the Arctic Council 2017-2019.
